«He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust’ » (Psalm 91:1,2).
WHAT CAN YOU DO when a person who lives under your roof has lost the desire to live?
That’s the situation Sudha faced when Mary, a friend whom she had not seen for sixteen years, showed up at her home one night and asked her to take care of Tina, her sister who had tried to kill herself. The problem was complicated for Sudha because Mary never came back to get her sister.
What did Sudha do? She had no experience dealing with such a delicate situation, and there were no specialized staff in her village to provide help to people with suicidal tendencies. Thus, Sudha could only pray for Tina and read her portions of the Scriptures. She gradually got her to eat and eventually, got her to talk. «I should never have been born,» Tina said.
Her father did not love her because he had always wanted a son. In addition to rejecting her, he also physically and emotionally abused her. In order to escape that hell, Tina got involved in the world of drugs.
Now it was up to Sudha to inspire in this young woman, in her twenties, the desire to live. One day, she managed to convince her to get psychiatric help in another city. In order to do this, they traveled about seventy kilometers, three times a week, but when everything seemed to be going well, Tina did not want to go back. The situation hit rock bottom on a day when Sudha found her in the kitchen of the house drenched in gasoline and holding a box of matches. When Sudha managed to persuade her not to set herself on fire, Tina shouted, «Why won’t you let me die, you fool? It’s my life!»
The light at the end of the tunnel shone one day as Sudha read aloud from Psalm 91. To her surprise, Tina asked her to read it again. Before long, Psalm 91 became Tina’s workhorse that she went to whenever she felt overwhelmed in the fight against her addictions.
«After more than a year of intense struggle,» wrote Sudha, «Tina got the victory over drugs. Within the next two years, she was already talking about how much Jesus meant in her life.» One year later, she had already found a steady job.
Do I exaggerate when I say that our God specializes in impossible cases and that His Word is powerful in bringing hope to hearts that are about to fail?
Today I praise you, Lord, for You are a mighty God, because You are personally interested in the well-being of the smallest of your children, and especially because You also take care of me.
