But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!» (1 Kings 8:27).
When King Solomon dedicated his new temple to God, he made a comment in his dedication prayer that reminds me of something I learned while serving as a student missionary.
Solomon wondered that if the heavens can’t contain God, how could his lowly, human-made temple ever hope to house the King of the universe? Then, just a few verses later, he spoke these beautiful words: «Hear the supplication [prayers] of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive» (verse 30).
The truth of the matter is that God doesn’t require a sanctuary or temple or church or mountaintop in order to dwell with us. He just needs us.
Occasionally our Japanese students would invite us to their homes for a visit. Or maybe we’d head out to an interesting restaurant. We told jokes, kidded one another, and basically acted silly trying to communicate in the language they were trying to understand. But they were also watching us, seeing how we reacted to different situations, slowly learning about our God through our words and actions.
One young person said to me, «You teachers are different. You seem to care about us. We like that.»
That’s why student missionaries dedicate themselves to God. They know He longs to dwell not only in evangelistic centers, but in hearts as well—including yours.
