ADDICTIONS
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” ( l Corinthians 10: 13).
One de las experiencias mås frustrantes de la Vida es tratar con personas injustas, irraof the most frustrating experiences in life is dealing with unfair and unreasonable people who do not honor their commitments. In the field of education, there are times when teachers make unreasonable demands, assign tedious and irrelevant homework and give extremely difficult exams. There are employees who must submit to the orders of angry, unreasonable bosses who expect perfect results in a short period of time with minimum remuneration. There are also citizens who suffer excessive pressure from the authorities who apply taxes and fees to insufficient incomes. In such situations, we often offer much and get very little in return.
Today’s text is encouraging since it presents to us a reasonable, faithful and just God. He knows us better than anyone else and He would not allow any trial superior to our possibilities; he always offers the way out of a temptation. The word faithful is the translation of the Greek adjective pistos which was used to describe a person as just, reliable, authentic and safe in commercial transactions or interpersonal relations. Even if it is a purely human concept, it communicates to us a rough idea of how God acts when we are tempted.
The story is told of a pastor who lived a degraded life up to the point that his own congregation had to reprimand him:
“Pastor, we want you to reform and abandon your sins once for all.»
The minister apologized, saying that the temptations that harassed him were tremendous and irresistible. He told them a recurrent dream:
«For many nights, I have had a nightmare where a cobra keeps me coiled and threatens me with its head next to my chest. Then I see a new image where the same cobra is a giant that is as tall as a four-story building; it keeps me trapped with no possible exit.»
Right away, an elderly woman uttered the most accurate interpretation:
«The bigger the size of the cobra, the greater is God’s effort in helping you overcome the temptation.»
Whether we are in the fight against sin or any other type of addiction, let us always remember that God is faithful and just. He asks from us only what we could manage with His support to claim victory.
