«The tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God». Revelation 21:3
IN THE LAST CHAPTER of the last book of the series The Chronicles of Narnia, C. S. Lewis wrote,
And as he spoke he no longer looked to them like a lion; but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them. And for us this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page; now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever. in which every chapter is better than the one before.»*
We have reached the end of «all the stories» this year. And every ending brings before us the possibility of a new beginning. How was your ending? I don’t know, but I want for us to consider that «the end of all the stories» does not come with the ending of a year; the «end of your story» will be completed when Christ opens the first chapter of eternity and we live in a world in which «there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away» (Revelation 21:4).
In the world of Genesis, the Lord went to the Garden of Eden «when the cool evening breezes were blowing» (Genesis 3:8, NLT); but in the next chapter of human history, God will not be a visitor but rather a permanent inhabitant of our planet. See how John presents it: «The tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God» (Revelation 21:3).
God’s presence will make that new beginning greatly surpass our previous experiences. The good news is that this promise, which assures us God will be with us, is now a most certain reality.
As we end this year, God draws near to us and whispers in our ear, «I am with you, so the next chapter of your life will be better than the previous one.»
