«God has made me happy, and everyone who hears about this will be happy with me». Genesis 21:6, GNT
WHEN I WROTE this devotional, Maria Cristina Camilo was 103 years old. In 1952, she became the first female radio announcer in the Dominican Republic. She is a beloved and admired lady in my country. In 2019, she gave a special presentation to a group of senior citizens and masterfully recited the poem «Evening Has Come to Us.» The first verses of the poem read:
«There are no old people here,
our evening has simply come.
An evening full of experience,
experience to give advice.
There are no old people here,
our evening has simply come.
Old is the sea and it swells,
old is the Sun and it warms us,
old is the Moon and it lights our way,
old is the Earth and it gives us life,
old is love and it spurs us on.
There are no old people here,
Our evening has simply come.»
The sea, the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, and love, are all old and still vital for life on this planet. The «coming of the evening» is not a synonym of uselessness; those whose evening has come are full of knowledge, they are «graduates of the university of life and time.» God kept His covenant and gave Abraham a son when he was one hundred years old, when he was «old,» when his evening had come (Genesis 21:2, 5). One might think that at the age of a hundred he had to be a grandfather or great grandfather, but the Lord made him a father. The fulfillment of God’s promise made Abraham’s life flourish, and with the coming of evening a new life also came into the family circle.
Sarah, who was also in her old age, declared, «God has made me happy, and everyone who hears about this will be happy with me» (Genesis 21:6, ERV). Yes, during the darkest time of the evening, God brought cheer to Sarah’s life. Hasn’t God done the same for you? Could you, for whom evening has come, tell others about how the Lord has gladdened this stage of your life? When evening fell over the lives of Abraham and Sarah, when old age changed the texture of their skin, the fulfillment of God’s promises filled them with life and joy, God will also cause you to rejoice.
