«You must not fear them, for the Lord your God Himself fights for you» (Deuteronomy 3:22).
Today’s text was part of the speech Moses gave when he was transferring his leadership to Joshua. He reminded the people of God’s powerful hand throughout all the difficulties they had met on the way to Canaan, and he encouraged Joshua with the same promises that he had received again and again from the Lord Himself: do not be afraid, because God Himself fights for you.
I was coordinating a program for people with special needs, when I unexpectedly discovered some shady business that my boss was involved in. I was afraid he would fire me to hide his illegal activity; I was afraid to take the case to the general director of the program, because they were very good friends. I was even afraid for my own safety and physical wellbeing. One morning, while I was praying and crying, a young man from another department came in and asked what was wrong. I briefly explained my fears to him because he was an Adventist and a Latino like myself. He promised to speak with the director of his department, and that same day I was given a new position within the same organization. When my boss told me that I was fired and that I had two weeks to leave, I gave him my resignation and I told him about my transfer to the other department. He was taken aback, and he wished me well with what appeared to be more of a grimace than a smile. Moreover, I didn’t have to defend myself, and I didn’t have to accuse him. God heard my cries and came to my aid.
Moses wanted to pass on to Joshua his own confidence in God ‘s leadership. He encouraged him not to be afraid, no matter what battles lay ahead. Our battles are not against evil armies, but they are just as real as Joshua’s. If you are fighting against a temptation, a fear, an illness, a family conflict, a loss, or a work, legal, emotional, or financial situation, God promises to fight for you.
When you are in the midst of the battle, claim the promise of His divine presence: «The Lord will not leave His afflicted, tried children to be the sport of Satan’s temptations. It is our privilege to trust in Jesus. The heavens are full of rich blessings, and it is our privilege to have the joy of Christ in us that our joy may be full. We have not because we ask not, or because we do not pray in faith, believing that we shall be blessed with the special influence of the Holy Spirit.»—Ye Shall Receive Power, p. 305.
