«The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace» (Exodus 14: 14).
DO YOU SOMETIMES FIND THAT, when everything is going wrong, you sometimes blame God?
That was precisely what Margie was doing as she was driving her car. Her father, a doctor, was battling the devastating effects of pancreatic cancer. A few days earlier, her mother had died in her sleep. In addition, the bank was threatening to foreclose her home and she could lose her house. And to top it all off, her marriage was on the edge of collapse. Margie was absorbed by her thoughts when she saw the lights of a police car in her rearview mirror.
«Would you please show me your license and registration? You were driving at 65 miles per hour in a 45 speed limit area.»
«After briefly looking at her license, the officer suddenly changed the course of his conversation.»
«Are you Dr. Littell’s daughter?»
«That’s right,» Margie replied. «I was going to his house to take care of him tonight.»
«In that case, I can’t give you a ticket,» the officer replied. «Dr. Littell tended to my mother when she gave birth to me. Go with God.»
Margie left immediately. She remained in her car as tears ran down her cheeks. had been venting her anger against God for all the bad things that were happening in her life, but now, through that officer, God seemed to be speaking to her heart.
Then Margie remembered Mrs. Stimpson, an elderly woman who did have good reason to complain and, nevertheless, did not complain. Mrs. Stimpson’s husband was slowly dying from cancer, her daughter had already died in a car accident, her grandson was in prison, and she herself was bent over from arthritis. How could Mrs. Stimpson deal with so many problems without complaining? One day Margie asked her. With a broad smile, while she kept on walking with her bent over body, she replied, «Exodus 14:14,» today’s text.
How did her experience end that day? Leaning her head on the steering wheel, Margie prayed, «Forgive me, Lord. And thank You because You have been with me through all this.»
Later on, Margie wrote about what in her opinion had been the lesson she had learned that day: «Right as my boat was about to sink . . . I was able to hear God’s voice speaking to my heart: ‘Be still, and know that I am God’ (Psalm 46:10).»
Loving Father, thank You because in good and bad times You are always with me.
