Puerto Rico is home to a very unusual natural phenomenon. There are three separate places on the island that are referred to as “bio bays.” No, “bio” doesn’t refer to biology; it refers to bio-luminescence-light produced by living creatures, like fireflies or, as in this case, creatures that live in the water. A few years ago I went with my family to one of the bio bays in the town of La Parguera. When we got there it was well after sunset, and we made arrangements to take a boat ride into the bay. Soon the boat headed out into the bay, stopping when the boat entered a clearing.
There was no moon the evening, and it was pitch dark. The captain had a bucket with him, and he proceeded to scoop a bucketful of water out of the bay and brought it into our boat as we huddled around it. He agitated the water in the bucket with his hand, and the water started to glow!
The microscopic plankton in the water made its own light! He said that whenever the water is stirred or agitated, the little creatures light up for a few moments. Then he told us that if anyone wanted to experience a unique way of appreciation the bay, we would jump in the water and the creatures would glow all around us as we swam around in the water as we splashed around in the bio bay.
Even though the plankton is extremely small, it makes a big difference in the darkness. The same is true for us. Even if it’s only you telling others about Jesus, you can make a big difference wherever you go. Imagine how much light we can bring to the world when all of God’s children share their light with the world!
