GLORY AND BEAUTY

«Make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty» (Exodus 28:2).

I don’t know why I have this notion that God is practical and minimalist like Scandinavian designed furniture. I tend to believe that God prioritizes functionality over beauty, with unsurpassed pragmatism. Where did I get this idea? I’m not sure. What I do know is that I need to rediscover the God of the Bible: extravagant, Owner of opulent beauty and abundant generosity.

God would have been able to have designed our mouths without taste buds, our retinas without cone cells, and our noses without the olfactory epithelium. Although we could survive without the ability to taste, to see colors, and to smell, we would obviously not enjoy as much. Eating a dish of polenta with sauce without seeing the contrasts of the colors, without appreciating the aroma of tomato and mozzarella, and without enjoying the taste, would not be the same. Knowing this, God gave us five senses and surrounded us with beauty. God chose the most beautiful and extravagant, not the most practical. We notice the same criteria in the design of the tabernacle and the new Jerusalem: God chose the best fabrics, gold, and precious stones in abundance. Why? To delight us, to fill us with blessings until they overflow.

Because we think that God is severe and frugal, we believe He expects us always to choose the most practical; not the work we really want to do or the dreams we really want to achieve, but the most functional option. However, «when we continually choose the practical and prudent, passion and desire suffocate,» wrote Shelly Miller in one of her articles. Over time, this makes «a part of your personality latent. God is not only practical, He is also majestic, opulent, and extravagant,» she added.

One morning, while listening to one of my favorite radio programs, the moderator recounted how God had guided her to give up her work and write a book. She explained that the hardest part was confronting what people would say, knowing that her decision would be judged as being impractical and unwise. However, she obeyed, and God blessed her with a new ministry, thus demonstrating His abundant generosity.

Dear Lord, sometimes I censor my prayers, my dreams, and my longings, thinking that You will give me only the bare minimum, just crumbs. Help me to see that, in Your abundant generosity, You prepare a feast for me.
You have much bigger plans for my life than I could imagine. Thank you for Your beauty, generosity, and extravagant love.
