GENUINE LOVE DOESN’T HIDE

LOVE

«Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant» (Proverbs 9:17).

From his terrace in the palace, King David saw a beautiful woman taking a bath. The monarch was electrified by the beauty of the lady whose figure seemed perfect. Then, he asked who she was, to which his servant answered, «She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite» (2 Samuel 11:3). Actually, it was very hard for David not to recognize her because her father was Eliam, a member of the group of Israel’s thirty bravest warriors (2 Samuel 23:34). She was one of his best friend’s daughters! As if that wasn’t enough, Bathsheba’s grandfather was none other than Ahithophel, one of David’s advisors who was most acclaimed for his intelligence (2 Samuel 16:23; 23:34). It’s possible that Ahithophel would later support Absalom as vengeance for what David did with his granddaughter (2 Samuel 15:12).

Bathsheba seems a little «careless» in taking a bath naked in a place where she knew she could be observed, especially from the royal palace. Was she perhaps doing it intentionally? Besides, she seems to react to her husband’s death with little pain and immediately fits into the palace as the kingdom’s first lady. So, it’s possible that both David and Bathsheba could have memories of a romance that had begun years before.

Despite knowing that Bathsheba was married to a man who risked his life for the king’s cause, David sent for her. They both looked at each other. Their hearts beat fast. Their first touch was enough to break lose the passion that burned in them. The pleasures of passion seemed to renew the king’s life.

The problem started when the beautiful woman told the king she was pregnant. Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, was in combat at the time; if he returned from war and found that his wife was pregnant, he would make a scandal and the king’s sin would be discovered, he could even try to kill him or organize some kind of riot to overthrow him. So, the monarch beat him to it and planned to murder one of his best soldiers. The consequences of that vile deed tarnished the life of one of the most admired men in the Bible.

Having sex with someone who is not your spouse is stealing something that’s not yours. At first it seems sweet, exciting and appealing. But sooner or later it will get you in serious trouble and you’ll pay a high price.
