And the people continued to bring freewill offerings morning after morning. So all the skilled workers who were doing all the work on the sanctuary left what they were doing and said to Moses, ‘The people are bringing more than enough for doing the work the LORD commanded to be done’ » (Exodus 36:3-5). The Seventh-day Adventist Osaka Center, busy enough during the week, seemed to fairly burst with activity whenever Sabbath rolled around—and for good reason. As student missionaries we hadn’t left our colleges, universities, and homelands just to teach English. We had a much more important work to do. Each of us had come to Japan to share the love of God with those who sat before us in our daily classes.
The auditorium served as ground zero for our spiritual attack on the lies Satan had been telling a whole nation of wonderful people. We played the piano and organ, sang quartet, duet, and solo songs behind the microphones, showed pictures on the slide projector, passed out colorful Christian literature and freshly printed Bibles, pounded out sermons on the electric typewriters, played soft background music over the sound system, and enjoyed the comfortable pews in the cool air-conditioned room.
Like Moses’ sanctuary in the desert, our little auditorium was filled to overflowing with evangelistic equipment made possible by the generous hearts of Japanese Adventists as well as loyal members of our church family from around the world. Without these tools, our outreach would have been less effective and more difficult to achieve. When your church makes a special offering request, think of Moses in the desert and student missionaries far from home.
