GEARED UP TO ALMOST FLY

Stan therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  EPHESIANS 6:14-17, NKJV

While traveling through Denver Colorado, a few years ago, we stopped by an indoor skydiving involves entering a large, vertical air tunnel that’s about forty feet tall. The walls are made of glass, and the floor is a steel-mesh grill. Under the mesh was one of the largest fans I had ever seen. It was the size of the entire floor! The fan under the floor blows air upward, strong enough to make a person hover. First, they made us watch a video. Although it looks simple, standing above a giant fan while it makes you hover is actually a lot of harder than you think. We then practiced a couple of moves, and the instructor showed us some hand signs we’d use. As the video showed us, you have to be perfectly in control of the position of your body; otherwise, the giant fan under your feet can flip you or slam you against the glass walls.

After watching the video, we went to get dressed with the proper gear-a special jumpsuit, a helmet, goggles, and special shoes. The jumpsuit was a little baggy to help catch the wind and hold up the skydiver. After getting all geared up, we got in line. The instructor was there with us the whole time in case we got into trouble, but when my turn came I was able to hover in a stable way and not smash into walls. Toward the end of my second flight, the instructor joined me and grabbed my jumpsuit and told the fan operator to crank the fan up. We suddenly flew up twenty feet high and did circles and spins; it was a great experience.

Many sports require that we wear special gear to help protect us. GOD invites us to also wear special gear every day to protect us from Satan’s temptations. Check out today’s verse for a list of that special gear!
