The Iliad tells the story of the Trojan War. According to the narrative, everything was due to Helen of Sparta, who was King Menelaus’s wife, being kidnapped by Prince Paris of Troy. During a diplomatic trip to Sparta, Paris fell in love with Helen, one of the most beautiful women in the world. After seducing her, he secretly took her to Troy, where he introduced her as his wife. When seeing what the prince had done, the Trojan court realized war was imminent. Menelaus had been offended to the utmost. So all the princes and kings of Greece were called to go recover the queen. Due to various situations, the Greek contingents’ journey to Troy lasted ten years, in addition to another ten years of siege to the city, which resisted Achaean attacks with great strength. But a clever trick, a huge horse that hid enemy soldiers, marked the end of the bloody battle. Troy was destroyed and burned. That war left a deep scar in the whole region and was told in a series of epic poems, of which two have survived intact until today: the Iliad and the Odyssey, attributed to Homer (c. VIII century B.C.). Other parts of the story have been told by subsequent Greek and Roman poets.
Have you ever heard that «feelings can’t be controlled,» that «the heart can’t be ordered to do anything» or that «the heart’s dictates must be followed»? Well, Paris and Helen’s passionate romance cost thousands of people’s lives, ended with hundreds of families, destroyed a kingdom and drastically marked the future of that region of the world. No, falling in love is not a game. Love demands responsibility, respect and commitment. Feelings can’t be left to chance nor is it worth it to give free rein to passion. A romantic relationship with a person who’s married or engaged (who already has a boyfriend or girlfriend) will bring about serious problems, which will even affect your family. Never consent to flirting or insinuations from these kinds of people.
