ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS
“Yes, Lord,’ she told him. ‘l have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God ‘ Then she returned to Mary She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, ‘The Teacher is here and wants to see you” (John 11:27, 28).
This is a story told in four acts. If we study Jesus’s encounters with people, many times we find that same pattern. In Martha and Mary’s case, it happened like this:
Act One
Martha, the one who used to raise her voice and complain that her sister wasn’t helping her, told Mary the good news in secret. It was probably not very wise to make a big fuss about Jesus’s arrival right then. We can also learn that some hearts are receptive to being called in secret, tactfully and tenderly.
Act Two
When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him (John 11:29,
NIV).
Act Three
Jesus approached the tomb and called to Lazarus, who resurrected and came out (John 11:41-44)
Act Four
Many Jews who had gone to visit Mary, saw what Jesus did and believed in Him (John 11:45). To sum up:
- He calls.
- Someone runs to Him.
- He performs a miracle.
- Others believe.
Stories like that sometimes take longer than a day. They may seem incomprehensible and might be full of unanswered questions; but never doubt that He wants all those acts to take place in your life.
«Christ had not only the loved ones at Bethany to think of; He had the training of His disciples to consider. They were to be His representatives to the world, that the Father’s blessing might embrace all. For their sake He permitted Lazarus to die. Had He restored him from illness to health, the miracle that is the most positive evidence of His divine character, would not have been performed» (The Desire of Ages, ch. 58, p. 528).
Let’s trust Jesus with our lives. Let’s allow Him to write the story. Let’s run to Him in answer to His call, knowing He sees everything and His purposes will be fulfilled so the story will be of greater blessing to others.
