Look,’ Naomi said to her, ‘your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. You should do the same.’But Ruth replied, ‘Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back.Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people shall be my people, and your God will be my God’ » (Ruth 1:15, 16, NLT).
RUTH AND ORPAH were two foreign women. They were both Moabites, that is, born in the land of idolaters. They did not seem very different from each other until the day they had to make the most important decision of their lives. Their husbands had died, and Naomi, mother-in-law to both of them, begged them, quite likely with tears in her eyes and halting words on her lips, to go back to their people, to their town, to their family. Naomi did not want to be a hindrance in the future of those who had been her daughter’s in-law.
However, Naomi’s request had implications; one of them was that the two young women had to return to their customs and the gods of their pagan culture. The dilemma of those two hearts, sorrowful because of the circumstances, had to be resolved soon. Would they go back to their past lives or would they look toward the future, walking in the steps of Naomi, a true daughter of God? decision was difficult. What do you think you would have done? Ruth prepared to follow in the footsteps of that very special woman named Naomi, who radiated light, bore a spotless witness, and had given her heart to God.
Every woman who lives a life of surrender to God touches with her witness the people with whom she relates. She sows good seed that, if it falls on fertile soil, produces fruits of honor and glory for the Lord. Naomi had represented the God of heaven so honorably that the most natural decision for her daughter-in-law Ruth to make was to embrace the same faith Naomi had and live with her same customs. Ruth was certainly blessed, while Orpah ended up in obscurity.
Jesus is waiting for you to also follow in Naomi’s footsteps, to be that type of woman who gives an indisputable witness of the goodness, the mercy, and the love of God. Do it in such a way that every person who comes in contact with you will feel a deep desire to change his or her life, follow your God, and be part of His people.‘
