One of my favorite European cities is Salzburg, Austria. Yes, it sits in one of the most picturesque settings in Europe. Yes, it is a city that is rich in history, art, and music. Yes, it is a city famous because Mozart lived and worked there. Yes, it’s famous for its towering fortress perched up on a rock overlooking every part of the city. Even though these are all wonderful reasons to love Salzburg, I must confess that I enjoyed Salzburg because of another reason. Before I tell you the reason, let me tell you a little about my childhood. Like other kids growing up in the 1970s, I didn’t have the option of renting DVDs or streaming movies on the Internet. We didn’t even have remote controls.
Once in a while, my mom and my sister would get excited because one of their favorite movies would be broadcast on TV—The Sound of Music. Naturally, I joined my mom and sister to watch the movie, and it became a tradition to watch it whenever it was broadcast. Fast-forward fifteen years. I was studying in France and touring Europe with four friends. As we neared Salzburg, we started talking about the different things to see there. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that all five of us had grown up watching The Sound of Music on TV, and we were all a little embarrassed to admit that we were secretly hoping to visit some of the locations seen in the movie. When we arrived in Salzburg, we spent the entire time looking for the places where the movie had been filmed.
Sometimes people feel embarrassed and ashamed about being a Christian, but we shouldn’t. Satan is trying to make you feel ashamed, because he doesn’t want you telling others about the joy that is in your heart. Don’t fall for his tricks.
