FIRMLY AND SECURELY ANCHORED

“We who have fled to take hold  of the hope set before us

may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul,

arm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,

where our forerunner Jesus, has entered on our behalf’ (Hebrews 6:18—20, NIV).

PAUL EMPHASIZES salvation in these terms:

The promise: Abraham had doubts, made mistakes, and committed sins, «after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised” (v. 15, NIV), a promise that was based on divine faithfulness and not on human behavior. “Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath” (v. 17, NIV).

The oath: Human beings invoke someone above themselves as a guarantee of their word. Since there is no one above God to be His bond, He Himself “confirmed it with an oath» (v. 17) as a reassurance, as irrefutable evidence that it is impossible for Him not to fulfill it.

The heir:Not only Abraham but anyone who trusts as he did, accepts the word, the oath, and thereby is ‘greatly encouraged” (v. 18, NIV) in the hope, having been forgiven.

The hope: There are anchors of various sizes. A small anchor can secure a large ship. Boats carry different anchors: one to use temporarily when the boat stops for a short while; one to use as the main one for work; and one to use during storms, to safely overcome any onslaught.

Paul knew of travel, storms, and anchors; since, when heading to Rome, four anchors were needed to secure the ship. No one better than him could use this anchor figure to refer to hope. The anchor was a well-known symbol of hope, and appeared in both pagan and Christian tombs.

Every well-thrown anchor is cast down, but this one must be cast up. More precisely, behind the veil, in the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ is interceding for us and applying His merits and His righteousness to our total lack thereof. No one could follow the priest into the Most Holy Place.

Christ is the Forerunner, which assures us that He is not the only one. He went ahead so that others could follow.

Do not cast your anchor in deep sea waters

on the quicksand of feelings and passions.

Cast your anchor high in heaven,

on the immovable throne of God.

Anchor yourself to Christ, who by His word, oath,

and promised inheritance secures our hope.
