FEAR AMONG OUR ENEMIES

«This day I will begin to put the dread and ear of you upon the nations under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you» (Deuteronomy 2:25).

The closer the Israelites got to Canaan, the more trials they had to face. Try had to cross the stream called Arnon, and Moses sent a friendly message to Sehon, king of the Amorites, assuring him that they would not take anything for free, that they would pay for everything they used (Deuteronomy 2:28). The answer was a refusal: the armies of the Amorites would go out to meet them if they tried to pass through there (see Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 39, p. 433). The abilities of these warriors far surpassed those of the exhausted Hebrews, but God assured Moses of the victory. When you are on God’s side, the divine Warrior will fight your battles and set the date for each of your victories.

No matter how weak you seem nor how strong your opponents are, you don’t need to use force or take justice into your own hands. God will be the one to stop evil. Fear and anguish overtook them, and that is enough, because fear can destroy more people than a plague. A legend tells that a traveler on the road to London met Fear and Plague, who confessed to him that they were going to kill ten thousand people there. The traveler asked Plague if he would do the work alone. Plague answered saying that he would only kill a few hundred, and that Fear would take care of the rest.

The people in charge of the Homeowners Association of the condominium complex where I lived were exacting usury in their financial dealings. I wrote letters to the other owners and told them how we were being robbed. I met with several neighbors, listened to their complaints, and I sent letters to the Board asking for the directors to be removed. Most of the owners did not dare to confront the directors because they did not speak English well or because they were not legal residents. I offered to be an intermediate between them and the directors. One day the chairman of the board asked me a lot of questions about my experience working on behalf of communities, and about some television programs I had directed. I didn’t know why he was asking these questions, and I didn’t think much about my answers. A week later, the directors were removed, and the Association dues were not increased for many years. God put His fear in them, and they were afraid they would be publicly exposed.

God goes before you in each daily battle; the only thing you need to do is to follow His instructions and trust in Him.
