Q: Where in the Bible does it say you should not wear jewelry and not adorn yourself?
A: You’re probably thinking of 1 Timothy 2:9, 10, in which Paul states, “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”
Like everywhere else in the Bible, a deeper meaning hides behind this verse.
When I was a junior, a rock group from England took America by storm. They were called the Beatles, and I, like millions of teenagers, thought they were the next best thing to sliced bread (which only sounds like the name of a rock group). The stores soon started to carry tons of Beatles merchandise—Beatles wigs, Beatles coats, and most attractive to me, Beatles shoes. I wanted a pair of Beatles shoes so I could look like John Lennon.
You see, I wanted to adorn myself with something that had no real value. Beatles shoes didn’t help me climb mountains, or play football, or even walk to school. They were only good for looking like a Beatle.
Any article of clothing, any piece of jewelry that we as Christians wear should be more than something that just draws attention our way. When fashion ignores modesty, good taste, and usefulness, it’s time for us to ignore fashion. “The wicked put up a bold front, but the upright give thought to their ways” Proverbs 21:29). That includes how we adorn ourselves.
