FAITH LIKE POTATOES

 ANXIETY

«For assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you» (Matthew 1 7:20).

In just a short span of time, Angus Buchan, a farmer of Scottish origin, saw his life involved «in a tangle of anger, fear and destruction.» The political and racial unrest that started in Zambia in 1976 made him and his family move to the province of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). With nothing more than a trailer and the help of a Zulu foreman, he settled on a land where he tried to start a new life. But the difficulties and the turmoil seemed to follow him even in this new homeland. Then one day, convinced by his wife Jill, he accepted the invitation to attend a local church where he heard the testimony of the other members and decided to give his life to Christ.

But Angus went beyond simple church attendance: he was determined to put God’s Word to a test in his daily life and to make preaching his personal ministry. From the moment he started to faithfully claim God’s promises for him and his nation, a new perspective opened up before his eyes. Once, an unprecedented drought affected the KwaZulu-Natal region. Even if he had experience growing corn, he made a big risk by investing in a potato plantation, convinced that God was guiding him. But the days passed by and the land stayed dry throughout the season. There was not even one single proof of growth in the potatoes; there were no buds or leaves, or flowers. Finally, harvest day came. Against all odds, Angus was able to harvest a spectacular crop of giant potatoes, which grew hidden, in the same way as the owner’s faith. His testimony was narrated in the book Faith like Potatoes, adapted for cinema by Regardt van den Bergh in 2006.

Like the South African farmer, you and I can ask God to fulfill His promises. The Bible contains more than 3,600 of them! Do you think God was wrong when He made so many promises? Not at all! On the contrary, the Lord hopes that His children would trust Him and that His Word would be fulfilled. Why don’t you seek God’s promise today and ask Him to fulfill it? Go ahead! Because God «has been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature» (2 Peter 1:4)
