Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed as the island of New Guinea trembled under the storm. A native to the island watched as the clouds boiled in the sky, driven by fierce winds over the mountains.
Suddenly the clouds seemed to form the outline of a face. It lasted for only a few seconds, but the image appeared so kind and loving, so peaceful even in the midst of the storm, that the man stood transfixed by its beauty. Then the face dissolved as other clouds swallowed up the mists that formed it. Months passed. One day a stranger arrived in the village and hung a Picture Roll on a branch. «Come listen to me,» he called. «I want to tell you a story and show you some paintings of Someone who lives beyond the clouds but once walked here on earth.»
The villagers saw a baby in a manger, then a young man working in a carpenter shop. «He was always kind to others,» the visitor said. «See Him healing sick people and raising the dead? Oh, how He loved people!»
Heads nodded as the villagers whispered, «That is a wonderful man. But are these stories really true?»
All at once, one in their group rose to his feet. «The stories are true, because I’ve seen that face before. It looked down on me from the sky.»
That was proof enough. «Tell us more,» the villagers urged. «Tell us everything about the Man who watches us from the clouds.»
The face in the storm had shone light into the hearts of the islanders and changed their lives forever.
