It was a hot, sticky afternoon in central Africa as the missionary walked a dusty road. «I wish I could find a water hole,» he gasped, wiping perspiration from his face. In this wild, desolate country, trails sometimes skirted small pools left by passing rains. Turning a corner, he noticed a beautiful pond beyond the bushes, its waters sparkling in the bright sun. «Finally!» the missionary exclaimed. Since no one was around, he began to remove his clothes. Suddenly a voice said, «Don’t go in!» The weary traveler glanced about to see who was talking. That’s odd, he thought. This hot weather is making me hear things. Reaching down to pull off his shoes, he heard the voice again. «Don’t go in!»
I’d better hop into that water quickly, he chuckled to himself, before this heat makes me completely crazy. He stood on the water’s edge, «Don’t go in!» This time the voice sounded urgent. Something’s strange about this, the missionary mused. Then, because he was a Christian, he paused. I wonder if God is trying to warn me about something.
He didn’t plunge into the cool waters, as he’d intended. Instead, he walked around the edge, peering behind every bush and shrub. Next, he sat clown and watched the surface for several minutes. All Smiled calm and peaceful. Then the water rippled just the tiniest bit as two round orbs stuck up above the glassy surface. The missionary recognized what they were. Had he put so much as a toe into the pool, he would have died violently. Falling In his knees, he prayed, ‘»Thank You, God. Thank You for saving my life! The eyes of the crocodile watched him dress and leave.
