EXPRESSING FRIENDSHIP

Q: My name is Michael. I’m eleven years old. I go to church, and very often a girl comes to our church. I like her a lot, but don’t know how to express it. I’m afraid if I do it the wrong way, she’ll never like me.

What should I do?

A: Girls can be tough to understand, can’t they? But for starters, don’t sweat too much about her never liking you simply because you expressed yourself in the wrong way. If a girl holds a lifelong grudge against you simply because one time you were awkward, she’s not a whole lot more desirable than a piece of moldy cheese. I’m not sure you’d be interested in a girl like that anyway. So, don’t be afraid about slowly letting her know how you feel—even if it’s not the «right» way.

There are dozens of ways to express interest in someone. For example, put a note in a fortune cookie and give it to her, share your favorite book with her, help her with homework, give her a couple two-dollar gift certificates for Baskin-Robbins, or write her a note and leave it on her desk with some M&Ms. The ways you can let others know you care about them are limitless.

Let me encourage you, however, not only to work toward showing this girl you care about her, but to make it a habit to show everyone that you care for them. You do that, and you’ll never be hurting for friends—boys or girls.
