«The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but deliverance is of the Lord» (Proverbs 21:31).
I HAD HAD a bad day. A relative of mine had a serious problem and we were all worried. I felt as though the problem were mine as well, and it caused me a host of emotions, frustrations, and annoyances. I felt like crying. I did not know exactly what I should do: whether to reprimand that person for the dishonesty or simply pray and trust in God. Be that as it may, I was sad and weighed down. Suddenly, I began to speak to God while I was peeling carrots; I asked Him to give me peace, wisdom, and a way out. I know that my face reflected all the mixed feelings that were inside of me, but I could not avoid it.
My five-year-old daughter was playing with her brother in the living room while I told God that I felt discouraged and needed His intervention in my life. At that moment, my little girl began to sing out loud, repeating the same refrain over and over: «Always be happy, even when things are going badly; always be happy, even when things are going badly.
«I listened closer to verify the words, and as if it were the answer from God, sent with a direct arrow to my heart, I changed the expression of my face immediately. Then I went to my daughter and asked her, «Dear, what does that beautiful song you are singing mean?’
She answered with her expressive face: «Mommy, that God’s children are happy even when things are going badly.» Little did she know that her childish singing was a balm that calmed my unsettled spirit. The next day, my problem was still unresolved, but my mind had a new focus: trusting completely in God, I would wait for Him to give me the victory. In the times of the Old Testament, men got their horses ready to go into battle, but it was the Lord who gave them the victory. No matter how much the soldiers put their confidence in that animal that they had trained for war; the true instrument of their success was the power of God.
God left a very clear message in His Word: even though you start to prepare your tools to conquer (or achieve what in your opinion would be a victory), God is the only One who gives the victory and who knows, in reality, what constitutes a victory in your life. That is why, even though things go badly, you have reasons to rejoice in Him.
