«Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment» (Hebrews 6: l, 2).
IN HEBREWS CHAPTER 6, Paul challenged his readers to fight for spiritual maturity. He insisted on the importance of turning away from sin and returning to God. He emphasized the importance of baptism, the laying on of hands, the resurrection, and the judgment. He made a strong call to move forward faithfully. ‘Ibis shows that living Christianity has to do with Christ’s work in us, and that this is evident in a life that is focused on the will of the Father.
Paul expressed a very serious concern. He referred to those who received the heavenly gift, who shared the Holy Spirit, and tasted the Word of God, and, after having experienced this, turned their backs on God (v. 4—6).
The apostle used an illustration for this: When the earth is fruitful, it is blessed, but when the earth is fruitless, it is cursed (v. 7, 8).
The chapter ends by mentioning a promise. The same God who promised to bless Abraham, and did so, also promises to bless us, and He will. Why can the Father bless us? Because of the priesthood of our Savior Jesus Christ (v. 9-20).
Do you know anyone who has turned aside from God’s path? Do you have a close family member whose faith in God has completely cooled or who does not yet know the Lord and His message? God’s promise is clear: His Word is still working on that person’s heart. Therefore, continue interceding in prayer for that individual because even when it seems like nothing is happening, God is working.
Pastor Samuel Arce was conducting evangelistic meetings in northern Paraguay. One night, there was a power outage all over the city because of a storm. The people prayed that power might be restored, but it was time to start the meeting and everything was dark. In the meantime, the church was full of people who were thirsting for the message. Then they parked a car with its headlights on directed down the main aisle of the church. In this way, the sermon went on, and seven people were baptized by God’s grace.
Perhaps your life is in darkness. Whatever your situation may be, there is a powerful Light that comes from heaven:
Christ and His Word light our way; that light is enough to guide our steps.
We are enlightened and free «when our conscience is captive to the Word of God’ (Martin Luther).
