DON’T JUMP

A wise man fears and departs from evil, But a fool rages and is self-confident. PROVERBS 14:16, NKJV

My wife and I were in Cairns, Australia on vacation. Our plan was to drive our rental car to the middle of the country to a place called Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock. Uluru is famous for being the largest single rock in the world, but since it’s located in the middle of the continent, it’s not easy to get to. I had a good map, and the trip was expected to take two days of driving. We soon realized that during these two days of driving we would pass through one of the most isolated parts of the country. Although we realized the place was isolated, we were not alone. We encountered all kinds of wildlife during our drive through the red center of Australia. In particular I want to tell you about our frequent encounters with kangaroos. As we drove, we would see them running around in the bush very often.

Many times, kangaroos startled us by standing on the side of the road as we drove by. The reason this was a little scary is that when you drive through isolated stretches of desert for hours, there is no posted speed limit. In order to cross such a long desert in the shortest amount of time, everyone tends to drive as fast as they are willing to drive. The fastest I dared to drive was about ninety miles per hour, while other cars would sometimes pass me going even faster. When you are driving ninety miles per hour and see a kangaroo standing on the side of the road only a couple of feet away from your car, only one I hi ng comes to mind: «Kangaroo, don’t jump!» Sometimes we position ourselves near danger, thinking we’re strong enough to resist temptation. We convince ourselves that we can get close to a fire without getting burned. Our verse today clearly tells us that only a fool tries to see how close he can get to danger. A wise man gets as far away as possible. Which will you be today? I pray you choose to be wise.
