“Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren” (Deuteronomy 4:9).
I have a friend who writes reminders on her left hand so she doesn’t forget what she has to do. Once, we went together to a gala dinner in London for a charity benefit. She was wearing a splendid red dress like something out of a James Bond movie. On her left hand, however, was a blue ink stain. I remember thinking it was a shame to detract from the glamour of the occasion with an ink stain. However, on second thought maybe my friend was right and it was worth remembering. Maybe forgetfulness costs us more than we imagine!
In Gabriel Garcia Marquez‘s novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, the entire town of Macondo gets sick with insomnia. With the long sleepless nights, the Villagers begin to lose their memory. Aureliano, a silversmith, begins to forget the names of the tools he uses, so he pastes papers on them with their names. His father, Joseph, copies the idea and writes the name of everything in the house: table, chair, clock, door, wall, bed, saucepan. . . Afterwards, José goes to the corral and marks the animals and plants, as well: cow, goat, cassava. . . Soon, Joseph realizes that if the insomnia continues, they will forget what the things are used for. Then he hangs a sign from the cow’s neck that says, “This is the cow. It has to be milked every morning to produce milk, and the milk must be boiled to mix it with coffee and make lattes.” Finally, the people decide to put a sign at the entrance of the town which says, “God exists.” What can we do so we don’t forget God’s presence and power in our lives?
Moses told the people of Israel to make sure they never forgot the experiences of the past. When we let them be erased from our memory, we allow them to lose their spiritual value and their ability to anchor us in the faith. Our prayers take on a new dimension when we remember how God responded in the past. Let us look for the Spiritual equivalent of tying a thread around our finger or writing on our hand (Deuteronomy 6:69: Proverbs 3:3). Keeping one’s memory active is fundamental!
Dear Lord, I want to make my prayers come alive today by remembering everything You have done for me. I don’t want to forget even the smallest of Your blessings!
