Mrs. Hazel Bretman had more to worry about than a stray dog asking for a bone. She had a hundred hungry school-children to feed each day, so when her assistant, Leona, told her that a dog was at the back door of the kitchen begging for a bone, she simply said, «Give it one.»
Halfway through the meal, her assistant tapped her on the shoulder. «Sorry to disturb you, ma’am,» she said, «but the dog is back begging for another bone.»
«Then give it one,» her boss responded.
The dog’s visits continued for days. Just as the children were filing into the dining room, the dog would appear at the back door and scratch softly. When given a bone, he’d hurry off, only to return fifteen minutes later.
The kitchen helpers were puzzled. «Maybe he’s storing them for the winter, like a squirrel,» Jocelyn, the woman who ran the dishwasher, suggested. «Maybe he’s got babies and has to feed them,» chimed in Rodney, the head server.
«Well, I’m going to find out,» Mrs. Bretman declared. «Tomorrow, don’t give the dog any bones until after the meal, when I can follow him.»
The next day the woman trailed the pooch the second time it raced away from the school with his bone. When Mrs. Bretman returned, everyone gathered around to hear her report.
«He keeps only one bone for himself,» she said. «The other he gives to another dog that stays chained up all the time. Tomorrow, let’s give him an extra-large bone for being so thoughtful.» We can learn a lot from a dog.
