DO NOT YOUR TONGUE USE YOU

‘Wise people store up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction» (Proverbs 10:14).

THE TONGUE

Several years ago, I had to fix some wooden doors in my apartment. After evaluating the situation, I considered that the work was not so complicated, so I took a saw and started cutting. The work showed my lack of practice and my scarce skills in carpentry. The concave cuts of wood showed that I had not wielded the saw with sufficient force. Then someone said to me: «Don’t allow the tool to use you, rather, you must use the tool.» Those words lit up my face. Then I observed the cold machine, determined not to remain at its service, but to have it follow my guidance.

We humans have great tools that we can use to achieve our goals. Surely, you also have skills to perform various functions. But we must be careful not to lose control of our own gifts, because even if they are good, without the proper vigilance, they can cause unfortunate results. This is especially true in the case of our tongues, one of the most valuable gifts that God has given to human beings. There are many people who do not control their words, rather, it seems that the tongue exercises control over them. Suddenly, they realize that their comments have gone too far and it is too late for them to recant without causing terrible damage. «I never meant to hurt you,» «I didn’t mean to say that,» «Why did I have to comment?» are common expressions from people dominated by their own tongue. Actually, living at the mercy of the tongue is a real danger, because you never know where it’s going to lead you.

Nothing and no one other than Jesus Christ should control our lives. It’s very dangerous to lose control of the steering wheel. The same tools that today are a blessing to us can become agents for the bad. The key point is not to lose control of our tongue. Here, what the apostle James said is very timely: «Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless» (James 1:26, NIVO. That means that controlling the tongue is one of the main evidences of a genuine Christian experience.

Today ask the Lord to help you use your tongue for His honor and glory and for it not to use you.
