«Look, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the Lord God of your fathers has spoken to you; do not fear or be discouraged » (Deuteronomy 1:21).
When you begin to read the book of Deuteronomy, the people of God are standing before the promised land with uneasy hearts. They are about to stop being nomads and become landowners. Their eyes are on are on Moses; they strain to hear his every word. Their parents and grandparents had been in this exact spot forty years before, but they had not believed they could possess the land. With heads bowed and their faith in tatters they had turned back from the gates of Canaan to wander in the desert for four decades. Had they learned the lesson of dependence and trust in God and in their leader? Only three survivors from the multitude that had left Egypt— Moses, Joshua, and Caleb—would be witnesses of the taking of Canaan. The rest had left Egypt behind, but their lack of faith had made it impossible to receive the promise.
During your pilgrimage you have seen great leaders fall, and many return to their old ways. You and I still remain as witnesses to the possession of the heavenly Canaan, by God ‘s grace that has sustained us so far. We are at the gates; don’t let the enemy play with your mind as he did with our Israelite ancestors. Stay alert; at any time the voice will be given to proceed toward the heavenly Canaan. Meanwhile, let us listen to the instructions before we go.
Moses has one last bit of advice before leaving. He divides his speech into three parts: 1) He reviews the history of God’s fatherly care in the past and His promises, already fulfilled or not yet fulfilled; 2) He presents the principles for a good, Godly life; and 3) He makes a call for commitment to obey God. Moses’s voice could not be heard by the multitude of about two million people, so he designated helpers, just as Jethro had advised him decades before.
Jesus also has helpers: our church leaders. Let us listen carefully to not miss any details: some remind us of past blessings, others counsel us on health; others help us to strengthen and renew our commitment to daily obedience.
Do not be discouraged; you have reached the last leg of the journey. Pray that God will give us willing ears and hearts, and will help us keep our sight on the fulfillment of the last events. Stay strong!
