«Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens» (Exodus 18:21).

Moses tried to resolve every disagreement among the people. Jethro, his father-in-law, advised him to establish principles which would assure equality and justice, according to God’s guidance, and to choose wise men to supervise their application. Thus, Moses would be free to decide matters of greater importance. The qualities that Jethro suggested the chosen men should have were: piety, moral integrity, and honesty. But above all, they should «fear God.» These are excellent values for leaders too. Do you have these qualities?

Delegate is a key word for those who are responsible for other people. Even in the home, the mother should not be burdened with all the tasks. If we delegate tasks wisely to all the family members, her health will be safe guarded for many years and her spirit will be more willing to celebrate the little successes of her children, and be able to help them in their difficulties. It is part of leadership to know how to find qualified people who can carry part of the burden. When we delegate appropriately, our own effectiveness can increase while at the same time we give an opportunity to others to grow and to demonstrate their abilities.

Besides delegating, a Christian leader should be open to hearing suggestions coming from others. Moses did not offer excuses when his father-in-law counseled him. He could have said that Jethro was of a different religion, he was the leader and not his father-in-law, or that he was going to wait for God to give him a divine order. We are enriched by the suggestions of those with greater experience than ourselves. If you see that a leader in your local congregation, or anywhere else, is overburdened with responsibilities, offer to carry part of the load, according to your abilities. Rather than criticizing and murmuring against a leader, join the ranks of those who can offer an encouraging word at the right time. Aside from Canaan, governments everywhere must be grateful to Jethro for presenting the concepts of delegation, organization, supervision, and evaluation.

Pray for the leaders of your church, your workplace, or your school today. Present them to God asking that they be filled with wisdom, prudence, moral integrity, piety, and honesty. Then think about which of your own tasks could be delegated.
