And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching. HEBREWS 10:14, 25 NIV
I spent most of my childhood on the east coast, but most of our extended family lived in California, so each summer we’d take a cross-country trip from one coast to the other. Since we were not wealthy, we did our trips the “cheap” way. But each summer was a new adventure!
My father loved road trips, so each summer he would make sure our trip out west was different by taking a new route each time. One summer we drove to Florida first and then cut across the lower United States on Inter-state 20; then, on the return trip, we came back through the north Inter-state 80. Sometimes we’d pull over on the side of the road for thirty minutes to watch a herd of bison cross the road. I would climb up on the roof and watch them go by, sometimes only a few feet away from our car. Sometimes we’d stop on the side of the road simply because we spotted an area densely packed with a huge saguaro cactus. And we never missed the opportunity to explore a national park.
Over the years our lodging improved and instead of sleeping the car, we would stop in a campground. My dad always tried to stop at a campground that had pool so that my siblings and I could splash around for a few hours each evening to burn off energy.
We may have roughed it a little, but I have wonderful memories. Building memories is a special part of life. Some people wait around for something to happen, but I encourage you to go and build your own memories. I do that by having parties at my home as often as possible; those are some of my favorite memories in life.
God put people in our life to bring us joy. I don’t believe that objects bring us joy. God has given us friendships; spending time with others is the best way to build memories. Just make sure your parties honor God!
