“O Lord, how manifold ore Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions.» (Psalm 104:24).
How creative are your prayers? My friend Kallie came up with the idea of texting God. About a year ago, she bought a new cell phone. Since she still had her old phone, she decided to change it into God’s «phone line.” Now, when she feels like talking to God, she takes her new phone and sends a text message to her old number. I thought it was a fantastic idea! Maybe we should create email addresses or a mailbox for God. I am convinced that God wants us to use our creativity when we speak to Him! My friend Stephen says that when he wants to spend a moment alone with God, he goes to a confectionery and sits down for a drink, knowing that in the empty chair in front of him sits the King of kings.
God created us unique and different and wants us to talk to Him in a way that reflects our personality and creativity. If closing your eyes and putting your hands together allows you to concentrate more, that’s fine! However, if you’re bored, maybe it’s time you found a better way to talk to God. The Bible does not say that we must close our eyes and put our hands together to pray. You can also do a prayer walk, you can pray with the Psalms, you can paint a picture that reflects a blessing or a prayer request, or you can sit quietly in nature to admire the beauty of the Creator.
God gave us five senses that we can use when communicating with Him. For ancient Jews, the sense of smell had an important role in worship. The perfume of incense evoked the holiness of the Lord, His love and redeeming power. In fact, the blend of specific fragrances used for temple incense could not be used in another context (those replicating the fragrance for personal use were cut off from the community). Take a moment to consider how you can incorporate more creativity into your prayer life and engage all your senses. How can you add a perfume or a particular flavor? Do you concentrate better when you’re still or when you’re doing some kind of movement? The Creator of the universe gave you a unique personality and creativity; don’t put them aside when talking to Him.
Dear Lord, I want to be more creative in my prayers. Please help me discover new ways to communicate with You to reflect the unique personality and characteristics You gave me.
