COTTON UNDER YOUR FEET

EVERYDAY OBJECTS

«How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation» (Isaiah 52:7).

My shoes were falling apart and my endless walking all day long had left my feet covered with blisters. Each step was extremely painful. The problem was that the colporteur assistant was going to be with me that day and there was no way to get out of the commitment to give my feet a rest.

I took several cotton balls and attached them to the soles of my feet with adhesive tape. Then I put on two pairs of stockings and the broken shoes and knelt in front of the gas box that was just before the exit. I prayed there, as I did every day; I asked God for strength and to relieve the pain so that I could fulfill the purpose for which I had gone to that place.

My area was 3.51m away, and the buses were on strike, so the mere fact of getting to my workplace was difficult enough. However, I arrived, and in the few blocks I walked, I was able to sell a lot. The last house I entered was that of Manuel, a very nice Spanish old man I adopted as a grandfather for a while. By that time, my assistant had already gone to be with another of the girls, and my tiring afternoon was coming to an end. Manuel offered me a glass of water, listened to the presentation, and bought the books.

That day, I sold four collections, more than I sold throughout the rest of the campaign, for the equivalent of what some people at the time earned in a month of work. However, the most beautiful thing was that I was able to pray with people in all the houses and a friendship was formed that lasted all summer. Even Manuel called to visit me once when he passed through my province.

That morning, my feet looked horrible, but I could not get this verse out of my mind, and that night, when I arrived with my empty backpack, I thanked God for the great miracle and for engraving in me with fire the certainty of that biblical message.

Perhaps your feet are also tired today, and you do not know very well what your day will be like, but entrust yourself to God, propose to bear good news and proclaim peace, and your feet will not only be beautiful, but they will be led by Him …as if you were walking on cotton.
