Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went to off to a solitary place, where he prayed. MARK 1:35, NIV
I’ve been to the Grand Canyon at least a dozen times in my life. If you go at dawn or sunset, you are almost always guaranteed and amazing light show as the sun creates amazing shadows and colors on the canyon walls. During a filming trip a few years ago, we planned to film at the Grand Canyon, and our plan was to do a day hike down to the halfway point and back. We got all our gear, packed a lunch, and filled our Camelback water packs with water and headed off. The first hour or so was steep drop down in to the canyon through series of steep switchbacks. After filming all the things we needed, we had lunch and soaked in the view and started to head back up toward the rim. The climb was not easy, but every once in a while as we hiked up we had to step off the trail to let a group of donkeys go by with riders on top.
If you don’t mind paying, you can travel into the canyon by donkey. It got me thinking about the donkey and how every day these donkeys make the arduous climb down and up out of the canyon with riders on top.
I learned two things from watching this. Number one, hiking up the canyon could be pretty difficult at times, but donkeys were available to help carry you up. Just the same, life can be very difficult at times, and God has offered to carry our burdens for us. Number two, I thought of how the donkeys do this climb practically every day and how that daily hike continuously kept them in perfect shape in order to do the climb. For us, there’s also something we should be doing every day to condition us to have a strong relationship with God. When we spend time in devotions and prayer each day, it will help us be in perfect shape to deal with the problems life throws at us.
