TEMPERANCE
“Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits» (Psalm 103: l, 2).
A few years back, I (L) had the privilege of living in Italy with my family. As foreigners, our situation was full of uncertainties and difficulties, but we had traveled with the assurance that the Lord had guided our plans to study there. Without even speaking the language, without job nor shelter and accompanied by our three children, we moved forward like Abraham from Ur. In that extreme situation and faced with daily difficulties, we always looked back to the times when God led us in the past. Every day and week, we took time to meet and meditate on each of the proof of God’s care and guidance. Over time, we have transformed Psalms 103 into a personal worship, reciting it in many ways. We started, like the Psalmist, by saying, «Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction» But then we kept adding, «Who provided us a place to live and gave us citizenship; who opened our ways to study at the university and gave us a scholarship; who crowns us with favors and loving kindness ! »
During adolescence, many young girls express their emotions and thoughts in a diary. Even if many times illusions or disappointments in love are exposed, noting down each of the received blessings is a healthier option. Through memory, each fact that was written down can be relived at a later time. Remembering traumas or dark situations in our life keeps them constantly alive in our memory but does not solve them. On the other hand, remembering the blessings God gave us in the past helps one relive the experience and delight in how God cares for His children.
Can you recall God’s blessings in your life? Can you remember God’s proof of love? «It is a law of nature that our thoughts and feelings are encouraged and strengthened as we give them utterance.» (The Ministry of Healing, ch. 18, p. 251). Choose today to nurture and strengthen those thoughts and feelings that produce gratitude and worship. Gather each one of the received blessings and make a list you can constantly relive. Then praise God for His kindness.
