«Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses» (Joshua 1:3).
An estimated population of more than two million people— men, women, and children; Israelites and the mixed company—left Egypt at the beginning of the Exodus. However, only two people from that initial group—Joshua and Caleb—entered the Promised Land. Lack of faith and the defeatist attitude of the rest prevented them from claiming their inheritance. Unfortunately, many of us live the same way: without enjoying the victory that belongs to us. Sometimes we compare Canaan, the Promised Land, with heaven. This isn’t wrong. However, the simplest reading is that Canaan represents freedom from the yoke of slavery here on earth. God rescued the people of Israel to give them a better life here and now, not only in the hereafter. Thousands lost this blessing because of not advancing with faith and obedience!
Just as they were about to cross the Jordan, God promised Joshua that he would give him all the land his foot touched. What a fabulous promise! With every footstep, Joshua and the people of Israel were setting up banners, claiming their inheritance. With every footprint his sandals left in the dust, they were defining the dimensions of their inheritance. God could have eliminated Israel’s enemies with one stroke. However, in His wisdom, He challenged them to conquer the Promised Land. Victory was assured, but the people had to fight and do their part. The battle would reveal who would rather settle for slavery than fight for their freedom.
Jesus promises us freedom from the bondage of sin; not only in heaven, but also here on earth. Victory is assured, but we must move forward. We must progressively conquer more and more ground. Claim your inheritance! If a relative passed away and left you a mansion, wouldn’t you claim it, even if it took years of formalities and endless paperwork? Claim your inheritance! Don’t get discouraged or give up. Keep moving forward; keep marking the ground with every step. Victory is assured.
Dear Lord I want to be strong and courageous to take possession of all the inheritance that belongs to me as Your daughter.
You promised that You would never fail me or abandon me. With You by my side, victory is assured.
