CHRONIC DISSATISFACTION IS TOXIC

“Therefore, you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect»

(Matthew 5:48).

DISCONTENT With something we did, can sometimes be good and make us be more diligent and do things better in the future; but remaining dissatisfied over something we have done and can’t change or improve, may lead us to toxic or chronic perfectionism.

This Makes us have a negative concept of ourselves and our abilities, while preventing us from enjoying what we do.

Wanting to be perfect is a mistake¡ it generates expectations that are impossible to fulfill and may lead us to suffer from various types of disorders. Working hard and making our best effort to do what we do, should be a keynote that drives our daily work, but not in order to be perfect. We Are Only  humans, let’s try to do the best we can within our humanity. The rest is in God’s hands.

The constant search for perfection drives friends away; furthermore, it causes states of anxiety and a constant feeling of failure. The paradox is that with their attitude, perfectionists sometimes make things really go wrong.

The demands from perfection usually come from childhood experiences with authoritarian parents, who demand and never offer recognition; or from fault-finding fathers or mothers who only highlight defects, but are unable to praise virtues; they demand impossible things for their children to do. In the Bible we find a request that seems to be the opposite of what we are saying. Jesus tells us to be perfect like our heavenly Father is. Of course, there’s no contradiction whatsoever, because God doesn’t ask us for perfection on our human level, in this world of sin. The other level of perfection, the one that never makes mistakes, will be achieved when our nature is transformed. But not here, not now.

Perfectionism wears you out, things done right generate satisfaction. Perfectionism wears you on details and loses sight of purpose, while things done right lead us to reaching goals. Perfectionism produces anxiety, whereas things done right give us a peaceful conscience for the accomplished duty.

Dear friend, there are many tasks that you will perform today; do them with dedication and care, with diligence and efficiency with cheer and happiness.

Don’t forget that God asks, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it  with your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
