Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for such is the kingdom of God'(Mark 10: 1 3, 1 4).
When Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was only ten years old, he went to a library to search for information regarding a rare species of albino house sparrows. The librarian treated him in a disdainful manner because he was just a child. This contempt did not stop Jean from preparing a paper on the ornithological observations he had made himself in his neighborhood. A scientific magazine published his article. When the librarian saw the printed copy, he began to show a respectful attitude toward the child. Jean Piaget grew up to become a major figure in child psychology and his theories are still valid and regularly implemented in the fields of education and learning. We should never underestimate children and teens because of their age.
There is a generalized tendency to deprive children of their rights, leaving them at a disadvantage. The United Nations (UN) became aware of the tact that children’s rights are being violated in many places so they created a convention on the rights of the child in fifty-four articles. The document sets out actions that parents and governments should implement to preserve the healthy physical and mental development of the younger ones. Besides the most basic rights (the right to education, the right to be safe from violence, abuse, and neglect, the right to health and health services, the right to relax and play, the right to be excluded from war and armed conflicts), they also recognized the respect for the child’s point of view. This is especially true when adults’ decisions affect children by always considering the minors’ maturity level which continues to increase with age.
Jesus displayed a very advanced attitude for His time. Children were not appreciated, neither were their rights acknowledged during the Roman Empire.
But the Savior not only made it easy for them to access Him; He also said that the heavenly kingdom belonged to them and He even told His disciples that, unless they became children, they would not enter the kingdom of heaven Matt.18:3).
n your relationship with your own children or other minors, always remember how Jesus received them. Be open to their points of view, not to dictate or control them but to carefully listen and consider their views.”
