Now we’ll find out who’s responsible,» Abu whispered to his friend Bella as they made their way to the chief’s hut. «Our witch doctor understands secret things.»
«The chief says it’s the new teacher with his Jesus talk,» Bella responded. «Our gods are angry and have destroyed our crops because we listened to him.»
The whole village believed in the power of the witch doctor. If the teacher was to blame, they would punish him.
«Our gardens have dried up,» announced the chief. Next to him sat the witch doctor and the missionary teacher. «I’ve asked our village shaman to find out whose fault it is.»
The witch doctor, dressed in his finest attire, rose and held up a bag filled with dried bones. He mumbled mysterious words, then tossed the contents of the bag onto the ground. After studying the scattered bones, he moaned, «The gods will speak through a chicken.»
Someone quickly brought a hen. With a flick of the wrist, the witch doctor sliced the head off the hapless fowl and then let its body run around on the ground. «Where it stops is where the blame must be placed,» the shaman intoned.
The chicken ceased its flailing and dropped motionless before … the chief. A gasp escaped every throat. It couldn’t be!
They quickly caught another chicken. It too met the same fate as the first. After running around, flapping its wings, it came to rest before . . . the chief.
The witch doctor, totally embarrassed and humiliated, slunk away into the night. «The new teacher is right,» Abu whispered. «Our gods have no power. I’m going to worship his God.» And he did. So did Bella and the entire African village.
