«And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes» (Deuteronomy 17:19).
This text belongs to the second of four speeches given by Moses that are recorded in the book of Deuteronomy (review of the law, blessings and curses, and a call to make a pact with God). In it, Moses describes different laws, including the laws about the choosing of monarchs.
The candidate for kingship should make a copy of the law, read it every day, and obey it. He should respect God, be humble, and not be careless of God during times of prosperity. We cannot know what God wants except through His Word, and His Word will not have an effect on our lives unless we read it and think about it on a regular basis. Today, it is not difficult to have access to the wisdom of a king of God’s people in Old Testament times; the challenge is to follow its instructions.
Long before Solomon sat on the throne, the Lord, foreseeing the dangers that would besiege the princes of Israel, gave Moses instruction to guide them. And King Solomon’s wisdom is available to you today. «There is no branch of legitimate business for which the Bible does not afford an essential preparation. Its principles of diligence, honesty, thrift, temperance, and purity are the secret of true success. These principles, as set forth in the Book of Proverbs, constitute a treasury of practical wisdom.” –The Adventist Home, ch. 64, p. 391.
Have your own personal Bible, study it daily, and put it into practice. According to 1 Peter 2:9, we are «a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.» In other words, we are candidate in training for the kingdom of heaven.
Begin today to strengthen your habit of daily study of the Bible; this unending fountain of wisdom will give you the discernment you need to make decisions, it will keep you humble when prosperity comes to you, and it will teach you respect for the Eternal One. This is the promise in Deuteronomy 17:20: «that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.»
