CENTER OF FOCUS

«Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God» (Hebrews 12:2).

How do professional dancers twirl around so much and not get dizzy? In addition to practicing a lot, dancers have a secret: the spotting technique. Before spinning, a professional dancer will always look forward. She will not look down at her dance shoes; nor sideways, to see what the other dancers are doing. No. Her gaze remains forward, anchored on her point of reference. Then she will start moving, turning her head first, and then her body. The head rotates first, just so that the dancer can keep her gaze fixed on the point that stabilizes her. As long as she does not lose sight of it, she will avoid dizziness and falls.

You know what I’m about to say, don’t you? We cannot lose sight of Jesus or heavenly realities! As citizens of the kingdom of God, we must keep our eyes fixed on the King so as not to get dizzy and fall. In Letter30 of 1893, Ellen G. White reminded us: «The more we contemplate the heavenly, the less we see desirable and attractive in the earthly. The more continually we fix the eye of faith on Christ.. . the more our faith grows, our hope strengthens, our love becomes more intense and fervent. . . and our spiritual intelligence increases.» Did you notice that? This is the fixed-focus technique! Your eyes are the rudder of your body; if you fix them on heaven, your whole life will turn in that direction.

Jesus, who began and ended the good work in your heart, is the point of reference. Jesus, who looked beyond the cross, anchoring His own gaze on our future happiness, is the center of focus. Jesus, the Champion who knocked out death with His resurrection and who offers us eternal and abundant life, is the only One worthy of being the center of our gaze.

Dear Jesus, there is no one more beautiful, more powerful, or more loving than You.
I want to look at You every day, every hour, and every minute.
Here and now, and when You come back for me, you are my center of focus.
