«Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you» (l Peter 5:7).
ANXIETY, the state of constant restlessness, is a «monster» that haunts many women. As a means of protection, anxiety can help us avoid certain dangers, but if it becomes pathological, it paralyzes us. Constant concern for the future can generate such a state of anxiety that it settles into a way of life. The toll is too high: physical and emotional health break down quickly when a constant torrent of cortisol runs through our body.
Various methods of controlling anxiety have emerged, such as relaxation, transcendental meditation or breathing exercises, which may be good alleviators. But as someone said, «You can have confidence in tomorrow, if you walk with God today.» I firmly believe that this advice has a greater reach than learning to breathe and relax.
Living today with the assurance that God is the One who sustains our life day by day is what reduces anxiety. Spending most of our time thinking about what might come, clouds our judgment and can cast us into a world of catastrophic fantasies about things that may never happen. «We are in danger, by worrying, of manufacturing yokes for our necks. Let us not worry; for thus we make the yoke severe and the burden heavy. Let us do all we can without worrying, trusting in Christ» (Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2, ch. 50, p. 466).
Make Gods promise your own: «Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.
…Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?» (Matthew 6:25, 26). To overcome anxiety:
- Take refuge in God and pray, «Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them» (Mark 11:24).
- Focus on what you have to do today: «Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble» (Matthew 6:34).
- Place your burdens on God: «Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved» (Psalm 55:22).
