CANYON TO THE TREASURY

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also doing. 1 THESSALONIANS 5:11, NKJV

While in Jordan I traveled to the ancient ruins of Petra, a desert civilization that was likely formed before the time of Jesus. About fifteen hundred years ago, it was abandoned and forgotten. The location of the city is in a unique canyon setting. We arrived on a bus, and we were dropped off at the entrance. The first thing we had to do was walk down through a long, narrow slot canyon. A slot canyon is a very narrow canyon, sometimes only a few feet wide, but is often a hundred feet tall or more. It is formed when rushing water cuts through the soft sandstone or milestone rock.

After hiking through the slot canyon with my friends for a little while, we suddenly saw a sliver of one of the ancient structures ahead of us. We continued walking until we walked into an opening, where we could see that an elaborate structure had been carved out into the rock. It was called the Treasury, and it is the most famous building in Petra. The treasury because bandits hid their loot in a stone vase carved into the second level. They say locals would come and try to shoot at the vase, hoping to break it and spill out he treasure. In reality, the vase is solid sandstone, but today you can still see all the damage from bullets!

This place made me realize you can build something by building it up or cutting or chiseling it out of something. True friendships are those that help build each other up. Bad friendships are ones that rely on chiseling or cutting each other down. Avoid those friendships; they will cause pain.
