He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. PSALM 147:3, NIV
Not too long ago I had the opportunity to travel with my family to the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands off the northwestern coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands are part of Spain, and part of my mother’s family from there in the early 1900s. What made the trip extra special was that we accompanied my elderly parents.
From the United States we flew to Madrid, Spain and then from Madrid we took a flight to Tenerife. We rented a car for the next week and enjoyed exploring the island. The middle of the island has a gigantic volcano, towering twelve thousand feet above sea level. This volcano has been erupting on and off for the past several hundred years. Along the northern coast of the island we stopped to enjoy white sandy beaches. A few hours later we drove along the south side of the island and made a startling discovery. The sand on this beach was jet black!
We pulled over and got out and walked down to the beach to make sure there wasn’t something funny going on. Sure enough, the grains of sand were as black as the night. The black sand formed when it cooled rapidly, the lava shattered into sand-size pieces!
You probably experience days in your life where you feel as though you’ve been shattered into little pieces. Life in a sinful world is not easy for anyone. Maybe a friend has betrayed your trust, or perhaps your family life is going through some difficult moments. Everyone goes through these shattering times, but God promised to heal our broken hearts when we come to Him.
If your heart is broken today, spend time telling God about it. He will bring you healing comfort.
