«Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul. Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me» (Psalm 131:2).
In his article, «Desiring God,» John Piper said that there are two types of pride: that of those who have and that of those who wish they had. Those who possess status, power, and money often take pride in this; those who don’t reveal their pride by wanting to have all that. Although the pride of the weak manifests itself more subtly than that of the strong, both are lethal.
King Saul accused David of being a usurper who wanted to have something that was not his due (see 1 Samuel 20:31). In other words, he called him proud. In Psalm 131, David declared his innocence. In the first verse, he said, «Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me.» David was making it clear that becoming king was not his personal ambition, but God’s calling. In the rest of the Psalm, we discover the secret David used to remain faithful and humble: quieting his soul.
In Psalm 131, David is compared to a weaned baby. Babies who are still breastfeeding think about eating when their mothers take them in their arms; they see their mothers as the immediate satisfaction of their hunger. However, a weaned child hugs his mother simply to be close to her. David says that, in his relationship with God, he is a weaned child. David approached God only out of love; He understood that even if God did not give him a particular blessing, he would never deny His presence, which is the greatest blessing of all.
Weaning is a necessary process for your baby’s growth, but it’s not easy. There is a duel, a loss, a change that brings tears. Whether we have dreams that God gave us, and they are being delayed, or personal ambitions, we must learn to be content like David. We have to silence our souls and accept grief. Pride brings anger and inner struggle; it makes us believe that God owes us, that He is giving us less (Luke 15:28). Humility brings contentment and inner peace; it reveals to us that no matter what we have and what we lack, God always gives too much (Romans 5:6—8).
Lord, teach me to put my soul in Your presence, to seek You and not Your blessings. I want to live in humility and peace.
