ANXIETY
«Behold, here I stand by the well of water» (Genesis 24: 1 3).
It was a hot summer day when I went out to find a place to live. The place we were living in Rome was so expensive that we needed to find an affordable place. So there I (L) was, headed to the old village of Poli where some friends, whom I met by chance on the bus, were living. Concerned, they advised me that on that precise days which was Sunday, it would almost be impossible to find rent, so they offered to help me find an apartment on the weekdays, and they kindly invited me for lunch. I joined them, hoping that their neighbor would give me some information. But the neighbor was sleeping so, instead of having lunch with them, I left and kept on going, thinking: «I’m not going to eat until I achieve what I came for.»
Indeed, the village was deserted. I searched thoroughly. Exhausted by the heat, I stopped by a fountain of water, There, I remembered Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, and I decided to cry to God in the same way. I told Him:
«Lord, I’m tired of searching. It is very hot and I don’t know where I could go any more. Even though I did everything I could, it was useless. Lord, I can’t even speak Italian well! Please, give me a solution in this place!»
I was still praying in my mind when a lady who was sighing passed by. I did not understand a word of what she was saying, but I managed to greet her by saying, «Dio la benedica» (God bless you). A few minutes later, another woman passed by the place and I ask her about it. She assured me that her friends’ neighbor could give me some information. Hardly had she walked away when I saw her neighbor, the man we were talking about, riding his bike. I joyfully greeted him and asked him what I desperately needed.
«Of course! My cousin has an apartment for rent! You can find her in that house (he pointed out to a house 100 m away), the one with the green canopy.»
When I got there, three sisters welcomed me. The first one, that gentle lady who had spoken to me in Italian earlier; the second one who told me about her friends’ neighbor; and the third one who was the landlady of the flat which was going to be our home for the next three years. That day, all the people I saw in the village had a relation with the flat which God prepared for us. Praise God for His mercy! «We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done . . . that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God» (Ps. 78:4, 7).
