BY NOT WAITING

«Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.» (Isaiah 40:31).

Buses don’t run often where I live. The 320 and 321 which go downtown only pass by every half hour. Since walking downtown takes just a little longer (45 minutes), I often prefer to go on foot than sit and wait. Waiting makes me nervous! Many times, when I walk and am almost downtown, the bus whizzes past at full speed. I know if I had waited, I would be on that bus and would get to my destination faster, but since I hate to wait, I settle for thinking I got some exercise. Sometimes, however, by not waiting, we make decisions that hurt us and that hinder our future.

Waiting is difficult for us because it requires patience and trust. Esau was impatient and sold his birthright by not waiting to satisfy his hunger. However, what Abraham lacked was trust. Since he and Sarai had gotten old, he could not understand how God would give them a biological child. Patience and trust: waiting demands both. Christian writer Lysa TerKeurst, in It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, said, «Trusting in God is trusting in His time. Trusting in God is trusting in His way. God loves me too much to answer my prayers at any time other than what is right and in any way other than the right one.» Honestly, when I start to get impatient and tempted to take matters into my hands, it’s because I forgot about this truth.

The Bible says that even the young and the strong can faint because of the weight of waiting (Isaiah 40:29-31) All those who trust in their own forces will get to a point where they will say, «I can’t do it anymore!» However, those who depend on God will receive strength to fly higher just as eagles fly above other birds. God promises, «They shall not be ashamed who wait for Me» (Isaiah 49:23). It is not a fragile or dangerous investment. Our faith in Him will never be ashamed.

Lord, you promised to renew the strength of those who are tired of waiting.
I am exhausted from repeating the same prayer, month after month, year after year.
I need You to bring new life to my patience and trust in You.
Show me, once again and with absolute clarity, that You love me too much to ignore my prayers. At the right time, You’ll give me what’s best for me.
