» ‘For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope’ » (Jeremiah 29:11, NLT).

To examine those questions, Sheridan decided to make a 100-mile pilgrimage down England’s north coasts. During his trip, he wrote a diary with his thoughts on identity and broken dreams. And although he did not find solutions to his problem, the long walk with God brought him peace and acceptance.
In one of the most moving passages of his diary, The Making of Us, Sheridan captures the beauty that can emerge from ashes: «The hand that makes the galaxies spin gave me life. He who holds the stars has made me His. I am a son of God. My life is full, my days are sacred. I am held by a love that is wider and higher than the farthest limits of this universe in expansion. I am a pilgrim of this world, in search of wisdom and wonder. I will begin new adventures and follow God, moving toward the unknown. The things I accomplish are not as important as the person I am becoming. Therefore, I will imitate the One who allowed His hands to be pierced. . . The way is long and the road is sometimes difficult. But, even so, I will not wish to live someone else’s life. I will take my place and do my part. If I don’t, I would lose something important, because the hand that makes the galaxies spin wants me here.»
Broken dreams do not break your identity. No matter how painful it is to see your longings break into pieces, your identity is never at stake. The God who makes the galaxies spin still holds you in the palm of His hand. There is still a purpose and a plan for your life. Your story is unique and your voice counts.
Lord, please heal my heart and dry my tears.
Help me to see the beauty that emerges among the rubble and ashes. Help me to understand that my identity and purpose are unwavering.
