Martin Nicholson couldn’t believe his eyes. On a tiny ledge above the roaring, foaming rapids, surrounded by towering cliffs, lay a dog—cold, hungry, alone.
The boy’s heart went out to the frightened animal. Sympathy is one thing. Action is quite another. Martin was a boy of both!
As he ran home to get some food for the trapped creature, he had no way of knowing that the dog had been on that ledge, unable to escape, for four days.
Inch by inch, Martin lowered himself down the cliff, digging his toes into whatever tiny cracks in the rocks he could find, hoping that the plants he clung to wouldn’t release their grip on mother earth.
At last he reached the frightened pooch, who gratefully accepted the food Martin had brought. The boy couldn’t climb out of the canyon with the dog so, after a tender pat on the animal’s head, he left the poor creature to face another lonely night.
Early the next morning Martin returned, this time with several strong men and long lengths of rope. Soon all were safe and sound. A meeting in Toronto, Canada, invited Martin as guest of honor. «Why did you risk your life to help that animal?» people asked.
The boy shrugged. «I have a puppy at home. She gets hungry. When I saw the dog on the ledge, I figured he’d be hungry too. So I fed him.»
A simple act of kindness? The people of Canada thought it was much more and awarded Martin a medal for his outstanding affection for a helpless creature!
